The dialect in the Chaohu Lake is a significant representation of the culture around the Chaohu Lake. With economic and social development, the current status of dialect use and attitudes towards dialect have evolved. The study finds that age, occupation, and education level influence the frequency and scope of dialect use. Most respondents prefer to speak Mandarin rather than dialect with younger generations, leading to a decline in the number of children using dialect and placing the Jianghuai dialect of the Chaohu Lake Basin in a potentially endangered state. While most respondents agree that the dialect is an important part of traditional culture, many believe that the dialect is no longer useful in daily life. Based on the survey of the current status of and attitudes towards dialect in the Chaohu Lake Basin, the study puts forward suggestions for the protection and inheritance of the dialect, considering their endangered status and social functions. These suggestions are presented from three aspects: policy proposals, path selection, and specific measures.

The Potential for Evil and the Actuality of Evil: A Reflection on Kant and Arendt's Theory of "Radical Evil"
    YANG Jin-lin
    2024, 26(2):  17-23+79.  doi:10.12152/j.issn.1672-2868.2024.02.003

Kant and Arendt's contemplation on the theory of "Radical Evil" provides two key dimensions for understanding the nature of evil: the potential for evil and the actuality of evil. Kant's theory of "Radical Evil" establishes the potentiality of human malevolence within the realm of the transcendental, whereas Arendt considers the "Radical Evil"represented by totalitarianism as an unfathomable evil in reality. The emergence of the concept of the" Banality of Evil "signifies Arendt's pivotal shift in thought, probing into the possibility of evil from the vantage point of its actual manifestation. To confront the reality of evil, it is essential to not merely perceive it as an entity opposed to good, lest we fall into the trap of the "demon myth". United in their endeavor to "demystify" evil, both Kant and Arendt propose that the potentiality of evil is rooted in human free will. This perspective is not a derivative of theodicy; instead, it reveals the essence of humans as moral beings and their undeniable moral obligations. While free will denotes an inescapable "Radical Evil" within humanity, it also equips us with the strength and hope to resist evil.

Betrothal gifts hold an indispensable role in the marriage customs of many regions, leading to frequent disputes over their return. Due to the overly simplistic legislative provisions on the return of betrothal gifts and the diverse customs across different regions, courts face significant variability in the factors they consider when handling such disputes, affecting the consistency of judicial decisions. This study focuses on judicial decisions in Fujian Province, analyzing the shortcomings in the adjudication of betrothal gift return disputes. It suggests that, based on defining the nature and scope of betrothal gifts, courts should reference local customs to clarify the circumstances under which betrothal gifts should be returned. Additionally, the study explores the proportion of betrothal gift returns in conjunction with local customs and proposes a unified standard for determining "financial hardship". These measures aim to further improve the rules for the return of betrothal gifts through the integration of law and custom.

The emergence of interregional governmental cooperative agreements in the context of cross-regional flow of social factors is an inevitable trend in the transition from traditional administration to service-oriented administration. However, the legal academia has not conducted sufficient research on the typology of intergovernmental cooperation agreements, failing to promptly and effectively address new issues arising in administrative practice. The gap between theory and practice necessitates effective legal frameworks to bridge it. Therefore, after clarifying the legal positioning of interregional cooperative agreements, this paper identifies the existing legal issues and, guided by the values of whole-process people's democracy and law-based government administration, provides innovative approaches to improve the legal systems concerning the legal basis, content, procedures, supervision, and guarantees of such agreements.

Grain is the fundamental material basis for human survival and development, as well as for the national economy. Further analysis of the spatio-temporal characteristics of grain production in grain production bases can provide a basis for improving grain production area and output. The MODIS data set was employed to obtain NDVI values from 2000 to 2022. The spatial-temporal evolution pattern of NDVI along the Yangtze-to-Huaihe Water Diversion Project (YHWDP) area was analysed qualitatively and quantitatively using a maximum synthesis method, mean value method, S-G filtering and various spatial analysis methods. The results are presented below. There were significant differences in the monthly NDVI values of high-quality rice-wheat along the YHWDP area. The growth period for rice was rapid from June to August, while that for wheat was rapid from February to April and from June to August. The annual NDVI average of high-quality rice and wheat along the YHWDP exhibited a fluctuating upward trend. The high-quality rice areas along the YHWDP area are mainly distributed in the southeast of the counties along the YHWDP area. In contrast, the high-quality wheat area is concentrated in the northwest of the counties along the YHWDP area, with scattered distribution in the southeast, forming a cluster area. The NDVI in the high-quality rice and wheat area along the YHWDP demonstrated a discernible tendency towards spatial aggregation, with this tendency becoming increasingly pronounced over time. The area of high-quality rice with the highest NDVI values along the YHWDP gradually shifted from the southeastern part of the counties along the YHWDP to the central part. Initially, the high NDVI cluster of high-quality rice was dispersed, but over time, it became concentrated in districts and counties adjacent to the YHWDP.

The Records of the Grand Historian: Biography of Xiang Yu crafts a highly captivating and influential heroic image of Xiang Yu, laying a historical foundation for the subsequent reception of his image. In the Yuan Dynasty, the reception of Xiang Yu's image by Sanqu poets revealed a subversive reconstruction that starkly contrasted with previous eras, characterized by a pervasive and negative tone of resistance. This distinct artistic tone and literary reception, divergent from earlier periods, were caused by multiple factors, including the cultural impact of dynasty ruler, the void in personal values brought about by political changes, and the loss of traditional beliefs due to disruptions in the imperial examination system. The void in personal values led Yuan Dynasty literati towards historical nihilism, thereby rejecting worldly values. Reclusion became the spiritual haven for Yuan literati in their quest for self-value reconstruction.

After the outbreak of the whole-nation resistance war against Japanese aggression, Peking University, Tsinghua University, and Nankai University were forced to relocate and formed the Southwest Associated University in Kunming. Faced with life hardships and pressures, as well as inadequate relief from various sources, the students of the Associated University had no choice but to engage in a series of social "part-time jobs" to sustain their livelihood and academic pursuits. These "part-time jobs" were a crucial part of the daily lives of the students, and could provide a glimpse into the living conditions of tens of thousands of impoverished students in the rear areas during the whole-nation resistance war. By sorting and analyzing materials such as the university's historical records, alumni memoirs, and diaries of contemporaries, this study delves into the types and impacts of the selfhelp "part-time jobs" undertaken by the students of the Southwest Associated University, thereby contributing to the research on the Southwest Associated University.

This paper constructs a cognitive analysis frame for multimodal critical metaphor, through the lens of multimodal discourse analysis, and by incorporating critical metaphor analytical procedures by Charteris-Black and the conceptual blending theory in cognitive linguistics. It analyses the ideology and inherent meanings behind 60 cartoons about "crackdown on gang crimes" from the perspective of cognition. It is concluded that orientational metaphor and war metaphor are used in the cartoons. There are three target domains, including "law enforcement officer", "mafia-like gangs" and "protective force". The multimodal "beat scenario", "deinsectization scenario" and "umbrella-pull out scenario" are constructed with the help of image modality, literal modality and many kinds of metaphors. The cognitive analysis frame for multimodal critical metaphor can deeply explain the generative mechanism and cognitive mechanism of the meaning of the cartoons, which could contribute to people's in-depth understanding of the cartoons.

The Secret History revolves around a murder incident involving several students at Hampton University, delineating the psychological transformations of these young individuals and showcasing the complexity of human nature. The novel is permeated with incredible coincidences from beginning to end. However, unlike the traditional use of coincidences in suspense and murder mysteries, the coincidences in The Secret History are not primarily intended to obscure the identity of the murderer. The novel's brilliant coincidences actually serve a threefold purpose: on the narrative level, they influence the development of the plot and the construction of suspense; on the character level, they reveal the deep workings of the collective unconscious of the subjects; and on the external world level, they hint at the relationship between causality and the operation of the world. Through the various meanings presented by coincidences in the work, the novel conveys the author's dialectical reflection on the traditions and realities of the objective world.
