The research on the relationship between park construction and public consciousness is an important aspect to explore the process of China’s modernization. The attitude of the public toward parks experienced the transformation from the late 19th century, demanding the same right to enter the public gardens as Westerners, to the early 20th century, urging the government to build public gardens and other public-owned leisure and entertainment places. This change reflects the gradual emergence of modern "public" consciousness and its interaction with the construction of parks.
